More Corfiot Food

My blog entry about the
has been viewed many times
so I thought people might like to hear of other restaurants we have
visited on our recent holiday in S.W Corfu.

This is an unspoilt area of the island where it is possible to still see Corfiot life
as I think it used to be......
..... people tending their gardens before it gets too hot......
......men looking after their olive groves, strimming under-growth....
......restaurants growing their own salad crops....

There had been very heavy rain before we arrived so plenty of wild flowers, grasses and green-ness.
This is something I find astonishing, as our holidays have been confined to August for years.

We stayed in an  area, a few miles from Agios Mattheus, with Lake Korission
and Gardiki Castle close by.
We discovered 4 restaurants, one quite by accident.

Driving to the virtually deserted beach at Lake Korission, we passed a man selling
honey on the side of the road. Yes we did buy some.

Opposite was a delightful restaurant, set amongst the trees with many different areas to chill out.

We ordered the dish of the day....there was no menu......it was kleftiko, cooked for 8 hours.

It was one of the best kleftiko dishes I have ever had in Greece.
Expect to pay a little more than usual.

On another occasion we drove to Paramonas Beach.....so much driftwood...... but my suitcase is not big enough......one restaurant, unless there was one tucked away somewhere else.

It was here I chose to have my favourite moussaka......
as well as big beans and the usual Greek salad.
The other two had dolmades and stifado.
All very good, and a very friendly football mad waiter.

The restaurant is right next to the beach.

Another day we went to Agios Mattheus, a pretty hill village where everyone knows everyone.
There is a post office here that sells postcards and stamps....the only postcards we found.
The restaurant was called O Veachos
www.mattheosgrill.com
He did take away as well.
We sat in what felt like the middle of the road with cars and vans passing by and many people stopping for a chat with the owner.

We talked about Brighton, gardening and wine-making.....a lovely man with good English.
Here I had saganaki, a baked cheese with garlic bread and salad. Delicious.

We didn`t find our last restaurant until halfway through our holiday.
Maybe its just as well because we might have gone there every day.

It was within walking distance of our villa.....a delightful walk, past gardens full of sweetcorn, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers......fences covered in morning glory......wild clematis with a faint perfume.....blackberry blossom. And no restrictions on the wine we drank!!!
As we walked through the grounds it was very interesting to see the restaurant garden set under the deep shade of pines with only early morning sun.

The decking was built out over the cliff with fine views to the setting sun and the beach down below.

The food here was very good.
The waiter was lovely....gracious and attentive.

I am not a lover of kalamari due to the squid often being frozen.
This was not.
If I could be sure of fresh kalamari, I would have it more often.
It was delicious.

We chose a small meze.

Cheese parcels.....tiropita.
These were to die for.

The chef`s salad...

.....and this is sofrito (thin slices of beef)
I asked for a smaller portion!!! Steve`s portion the night before was double this.

Now it is back to Blighty and the diet.

  2. Aah, it looks so divine. I'm not sure that much of that food would be veggie-friendly, but I'd enjoy the sitting, drinking and watching!
